Cutting threaded steerer... good idea ?

You don't that's not how threaded works.

That 40 mentioned is just the approximate headset stack height, it should not be used as a target for where to cut.
I can be used as an, if it is a lot less then you are doing it wrong, if it is a lot more then you are also doing it wrong.

I think pigman has just added a bit of confusion for you :)

HP-1055 ?
would be headtube length +32.7mm

You will have had 21.2mm sticking out the top.

Re:

Ive got lost with what everyone is trying to explain. What I initially tried to say was
1. Measure headtube. Lets say it measures 140mm as an example
2 from the top of the fork crown measure 140 + 40mm = 180mm. That's where to cut the steerer.

This additional 40mm should allow you to fit any 80s headset from campag, shimano, tange or mavic
(I seem to recall the actual measurement for a campag record headset was 38mm, so you should be ok
Not sure whar was measured if it now doesnt fit

Re:

But that is not how to do it, many headsets including the 105 here would not fit.

Replace that 40mm, with actual headset stack height, don't guess or assume.
Though I'm sure many 80s headset still had the high 40mm stack height, Mavic included.

yes, agreed!

But even having made that assumption, i'm surprised it now doesn't fit. The 105 headset of old was particularly noted as one with a low stack height - I even resorted to buying one myself at times. If anything, I would expect the OP saying it's now too long, he needs more spacers.

Something, somewhere seems lost in translation. i'm wondering what that was

Re:

What's the confusion? He's sorted it, right? It fits, he just had to cut off a bit more than suggested :|

Could have used more spacers instead, sure, but why?

Well done OP!

if that's the case, then yeah, ok, job well done.

But this is what the OP wrote "I guess this steerer will only be usable with a low stack headset from now on, but i can't figure out how i could have done it differently (to get closer to 40mm for instance). Any idea ?"

With that, I am reading he cut it too short

Confusion confusion ??

Seems you are over-thinking it, I don't see an issue.

I think he means it's OK now, but if he needs to replace the headset in future he needs a relatively (compared to the 40mm suggested) low stack such as the 105 one he is using. Which sounds sensible enough to me.

As for doing it differently - spacers would be the answer. But it's fine as is.
