what makes you think the bike failed? as matey said you hit anything that hard is gonna bend, or in this case snap,

From the cyclingnews:
The crash happened just after the peloton descended down a bluff to cross the Broad River, 65km into the stage. Up to that point the terrain had been flat like the first two days, but the peloton was crossing the bridge at speeds reaching 80km/h when Collier's wheel became wedged in the concrete surface, sending him over the handlebars.

"I came out pretty lucky," said Collier. "Basically, it was the way I went down... as soon as we got onto that bridge, there was a seam in the concrete that swallowed my front wheel. It just came to a standstill when I crossed into it and I was vaulted over the bars.

That tells something..

My CAAD 9 frame did the exact same thing 2 years ago. Some socer mom on her cell phone tried taking a right hand turn into me. i swearved to avoid her and hit a curb at like 25mph. I walked home w/ my top tube in hand, the down tube seperated at the bb but was still attached at the head tube. Crazy. thats the problem w/ metal bikes thats the problem w/ metal bikes that weigh under 15 pounds.

Older isn't always better....

The owner of this bike decided that it was a good idea to take a 20+ year old carbon fiber french-made bike that's known for catastrophic failure on a 160 mile bike tour. He guy holding the bike is a ride-support mechanic. The owner was taken away in an ambulance after catching himself with his face.
