crap bikes - discuss...

In 1994 I bought a Marin Pine Mountain. I loved that bike, but it felt horribly nervous, something which improved with suspension forks. It took me 17 years to realise that something just wasn't right. I swapped all its bits last year onto a '94 Lava Dome frame, which instantly felt right.

So the Pine Mtn gets it I'm afraid. As a tourer it was brilliant, but for singletrack it was just unwieldy.
I even bought a 1991 version a couple of years ago, which was also awful.

It's odd, because I have a 1990 Palisades which is a brilliant tourer and the bike you would have to drag from my cold dead hands.

full suspension cannondale's i'm affraid

drooled over the first EST in the shop's back in the day.
however, when i got one, the bobbing send you to the moon and the first generation headshock was awfull.

loved the cannondale super v design, with missy giove winning every race, but that must be her being a good racer, because the one i got (not a top of the line model) rode well, but only after blocking the rear suspension.

didn't like flexstems, grip shifts in the mud, weak shimano springs in rear mech's

grtz, danny

1992 Shimano XT shifters.

Brake levers were better in 1991 (with that little window, beautiful). I broke FOUR shifters (three rear, one front).

I changed to Grip Shift. These ones but with different grips

Maximum rubbish also... Not that my engineering abilities were top, but those things were ugly to use for me. They worked, yes, and they were relatively tough, but ugly to use. And then, suddenly, the whole thing breaks and mom looks at you, a raging teenager, and tells you to stop breaking things.

Were the XTR reliable?

I think XT thumbshifters were just great, solid, nice looking...

Oh AMEN I SAY! First gen rapid fire shifting on XT (90/91ish) push push instead of push pull. Was CRAP! I put XT thumbies on and people made fun of me back then. Of course, I was the first to get Windows 95 and hates the instability so much I downgraded to Win 3.1.1. ;)

Why the f**k are people debating 'crap' and not doing what the thread was designed and asked for.
Name a CRAP BIKE and WHY it is crap....
with no comeback on your opinions.

Shut the f**k UP the rest of you.

<off to get a coffee...>

and to think I'd been wasting my time thinking of a polite way to say this...

Crap bikes are the ones which can't fulfill their promise - so if you put an ATB sticker on something which can't cope with a damp field...

ALL suspension bikes with stupid pivot positions which then rely on clever shocks to mask them. Crap. Yes Kona I'm looking at you.

And any budget bike where the marketing department has demanded bouncy forks and rubbish disc brakes that are just hugely heavy and utterly ineffective and leave no budget for a decent frame & wheels  Actually, I guess that's the tip of anything specced for advertising's sake. So all GTs ever. Crap. Except the RTS which I rather like...

Bit broader than the brief perhaps - I'll get more specific later!

TBPH I doubt any of you are qualified to comment on 'crap' bikes unless you used to do a paper round on a Tradebike! ;)

I've got a crap bike. It's a Marin OPOC. (Other People's Old Crap)....came from a skip and was re-built with re-cycled rubbish. It's really crap. It mings without mercy. But when I come out of work or the pub, it's still there. It's so crap no one want to steal it. Hooray for CRAP!!!

Universal Sierra Nevada.
Loved it till I put it in the boot of the car with a Cannondale (bought from a police auction) on top and the forks bent. Looking back it was god awful.
Not had many crap bikes really. Recently I bought a Giant Trance X4 back end never felt like it was connected to the front.
Horrible thing. Went straight back to Hardtails.

Oh yeah I forgot one. After a break from bikes I bought a Boss something or other. Looked quite good. Rode terribly. Had crappy discs that didn't stop. Full suspension which didn't work (I think I just dislike full suspension) and terrible forks that were like riding over jelly.
