For me it can be very model/manufacture/size dependant, some look awesome (as pictured above) others look awfull in my opinion.

I agree but still think cool. plus a great idea to move the stay out the way :cool:
 
What was the idea behind them? From what I know:

1) Allows for shorter "tucked in stays" helped climbing

2) Chain doesnt need to be broken.

3) err thats it.

Definately a YES from me! Yeti Ultimate has to be the best example out there IMO.

One thing to note though - some manucturers used the frame design to follow the trend (early 90's) of getting the chainstays as short as possible. It helped with climbing for sure but descending became very skittish on some - again my opinion only.

yeah, no chainslap either.
I think I asked on a STW thread once when cove were bringing out an estay version of the hummer.
