Cooks Spider question

Does anyone know how to remove the spider (if it is removable) from the e type cooks crank arms ?

I am trying to remove the outer chainring ring from the chainset, and the female part of the chainring bolt does not have enough room to lift up and out , behind the crank arm, ? so does this mean the spider is removable.. ?

Cant see any bolts etc to undo , apart from the main centre part of the crank itself, however the tapers are not at right angles to each other , meaning that using a spanner to possibly 'unscrew' this part is not possible ? does this require a special cooks tool ? or am I missing something .. ?

Anyone offer advice please..

I think there was a thread about this recently .

I dont think you can remove the spider without damaging it . and the chainring bolt should be fitted the toher way round to have easy access to it .

And the spider is deff removable , just not sure how to do it,, I assume from reading the above that once the chainring bolts have been removed the spider should come off ?

All sorted,,..... the spider is not in fact bolted onto the arms,, its just press fitted against them so no special tool required... panic over problem solved

I am trying to swap out two different colored spiders on two sets of e series cranks.

I see that that they are simply press fitted.

BUt I swear these both feel like plastic spiders and I am fearful of snapping them.

Could they in fact, be plastic? (THey did NOT come from the same source so impossible that the previous Owner(s) fabricated them)

Am I being overly cautiious?

A little guidance would be deeply appreciated.

They were alloy. If yours has been replaced with plastic then I wouldn't use the cranks and god only knows where/why someone would get them made of plastic but it wouldn't be reputable!

It should be a case of just pushing off with your thumbs but if you struggle then try to slide a pallette knife between the crank and spider and prise a gap by slowly working around the spider (just don't use a screw driver as that will wreck everything).

I didnt fiddle with them too much. THey just seemed to feel flimsy and had a bit of a pastic-ee sheen to them.

I will assume they are not plastic and gentle atttempt your removal technique with a putty knife.

They're definitely not plastic & definitely are removable, because I have a spare NOS one sitting here... As there were spare spiders available, presumably there's a simple method for owners to swap them over.

Sorry that I can't be of more help, but I'm currently in a different country to my E-type crank arms, so I can't take a look at them.
