Switched on this morning and it started by running chkdsk, which then went on for a while then froze at 53% complete.
Restart-abort chkdsk option and it boots up to desktop

Took a wee look at tech sites to try and see whats amiss.Appears the hard drive is suffering problems and may stop working.Ran chkdsk from the start menu and it came up with 20 or so unreadable segments.
But didnt say how or if it could be fixed :?

Any ideas as to why this suddenly appeared :? Everything was fine last night

Sometimes, over time, disks go bad.

My advice: now - save / backup any data that you need and won't otherwise be able to recover.

Then I'd get a new hard drive - most either come with, or have software from their website to help you migrate your OS drive to a new one, once connected.

Sometimes formatting (and sometimes using LLF) can help either get around or reviving disks that have had errors - but in general, I'd never fully trust a disk like that again.

So as I said, try and get any data copied / backed-up as soon as, then I'd plan to swap it out.

What Neil said...

Disks can and do fail without warning sometimes. Backup what you can and replace it, I've had two drives go at work in the last week, working one day and semi-functional at best the next. Cheap enough to replace though, for the cost it's not worth risking your data.

just a thought (well a recent problem i had)
are you on windows 7? did you recently install windows 7 service pack 1?

Mine is a PC tower type.
When i had the system built i was limited to funds, this is the opportunity to do the upgrades to the ram and get W7 in place of XP.
At the moment its a mid-range gaming rig

Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard
Athlon 64 x2 6000+ [3.01ghz]
3GB ram
XFX Nvidia 9800 GTX+
1/2 TB HD
700w psu
On board sound
XP home edition SP3
usual Cd/dvd w/RW etc

I think a new HD or 2 say a small one for the operating systems and a larger for storage :?
Another 3gb ram and another xfx graphics card to run in tandem.
