Clip vs pedal spacer - any ideas?

which are a tad inelegant but low key enough to get by with.

Did my first proper ride with clips n straps last weekend. Horrible, faffing getting in, and foot slipped out on a climb as was a bit loose due to fear. But even though can get pre-1989 clipless Mr Eroica forbids it.

My retro clip/shoe mither worthy of a whole different topic however...
Doing that "mod" does it not move the strap position to near the toe of the shoe? & not be in the correct position in regard to the shoe plate.
 
You're probably right, but it is a minor compromise IMHO.

The problem with getting the longer toe clip however is that these pedals have particularly wide fixing points and are thin on the ground. I've already discovered that the nice aero-style pedals I own are also unusable as the requisite toe clips are also thin on the ground and stupidly £££ anyway.
