Clip vs pedal spacer - any ideas?

So having found I can't actually get away with M clips for L feet, I need to revisit my pedal configuration.

The problem is that these particular pedals, despite being unremarkable Lyotard mass-produced (and heavy), need a wider than usual mount, and such clips are a tad thin on the ground.

The other factor I need to take into account is that both peds and clips are virtually unused and nice and shiny.

So my options are...

  • Get longer clips (might not be as nice condition, extra £££ and will feel have wasted money on existing)
  • Insert some spacers (not really playing the renovation game)
  • Drill holes through the reflectors to fit cheaper but more available clips (pains me to be destructive to peds in such good condition, even if cheap tat. Sadly the reflectors don't conveniently pop out.)
  • Get different pedals AND longer clips

If I go the spacer route, any ideas what the best material is to use? Best as in not looking completely cheap and rubbish or stupid. I couldn't find anything in Wickes...

If anyone wants to do a straight swap, do let me know.

It might, but it's got a flat load from both pedal and clip and you would have to be pretty brutal to crush it...
That's why I suggested nyloc nuts, to enable a sensible torqueing up of the bolts and yet without the risk of it wriggling loose. Few people pull up on the clips heavily anyway.

Why don't you try using a few 5mm nuts as spacers just to see if it works for you? You can change them for bits of tube later if all is well. I would use round tube, which would look better than square. I think you can get it at B&Q.

Years ago I used a small stack of washers (probably about 1/4 inch of an inch total ) when fitting Medium toes clips with Size 9 1/2 or 10 shoes. If I was to do the same today I would purchase some stainless steel screws, nylock nuts and washers from eBay. But Long clips would be best, from somewhere like Spa Cycles or SJS Cycles.

@midlife, ooooh no it has to be Lyotard for authenticity. Even though they weigh a ton :(

For a quick fix I used some rubber sink washers from Wickes...

which are a tad inelegant but low key enough to get by with.

Did my first proper ride with clips n straps last weekend. Horrible, faffing getting in, and foot slipped out on a climb as was a bit loose due to fear. But even though can get pre-1989 clipless Mr Eroica forbids it.

My retro clip/shoe mither worthy of a whole different topic however...
