Chris King classic or Shimano XTR hubs?

Other than aesthetics, any preference to either - in terms of reliability and performance.

I have always liked the XTR M900s but I am undergoing some peer pressure to go Chris King classics....

Kings are much better hubs.

I have a couple sets of King hubs and never had a single problem with them, the engagement is much better, and lighter as well.

However I have never heard of any reliability issues with XTR hubs.

I had an xtr 950 free hub go south on me. Kings are on another level.

After 5 years of abuse I rebuilt a rear King just to see what was inside. So well made, and that goes for their hub tools too.

I run 950 Xtr hubs on my Santa Cruz, parts are a pain. Bet you can get parts (although it sounds like you won't need them) for the King hubs

Older XTR like M900 are great; the later ones with aluminium axles had undersized bearings to squeeze in the fax axle...the bearings were overloaded and didn't last well. They then shaved off more weight with time and things got even more fragile.
