Chang Star Brakes

My '93 Norco Cherokee has these. Two questions:

1. The Cherokee also has steel rims. I'll be converting to aluminum. Will these original brakes still "suffice"?
2. Should I upgrade the brakes (looking for opinions here - would like to keep the bike as original, as possible)

This bile will become my son's university commuter. I can find "zip" on this model from '93, online. So, for that reason, we want to get her back on the road, daily!

With aluminium rims these brakes will be better than before and with new brake blocks better still. Yes the brakes will suffice as a commuter, but will be bad if riding modern enduro trails

I thought the same. And I found out the Norco's an '89. When I tried to find out more from Norco - no evidence of a Norco Cherokee prior to '93 - they had no clue when it was made. But the components confirm 1989.
