Chain advice for a single speed

I'm up to the point of getting a chain for my single speed Zaskar project.

I've seen stainless steel chains available, but a search through these forums led me to a post where somone stated they avoided them as they have heard bad things about them. Does anyone have experience of them? I believe KMC sell some.

Also, does anyone have any particular recommendations on chains? Any feedback on how good Izumi, KMC, DID, Onza or any other chain makes are? Or would you stick to Shimano or SRAM?

KMC Z610 HX - it's what I always use on singlespeed and IGH bikes and they've always been excellent.

Are you using a tensioner?

You want something strong rather than light as a singlespeed chain is going to be under more pressure. My personal choice is the Gusset Bling Slink half link BMX chain in 3/32" flavour. Good chains that resist stretching, don't snap and are not too heavy compared to others i have used in the past.

Mmmm...don't agree...'normal' chains take a whole heap of stress too...no need for anything heavy like BMX chains, 1/8th etc for singlespeeding.
I tend to use a DA/XTR 9 speed chain...light enough and strong enough

PS And I'm not a light bloke and I do mash hills

Last time I used a regular chain on a Singlespeed I got a six inch scar up the back of my calf when it snapped and the nasty Easton DH pedal muched my leg open.

I agree that a 1/8 isn't needed but a beefy 3/32 half link is a much stronger option.

That said, I hear you are partial to a little claret Carl. ;)

I'd argue that a normal 3/32" singlespeed specific (ie non derailleur) chain is at least as strong as one of those BMX half link chains.

Yes I agree, but the half link chain negates the need for a tensioner (op is using a frame with vertical drop outs) in most cases. I have used tensioners in the past and they have failed or worked loose on every occasion.
