Carlton for the enthusiasts.

No good looking in the catalogues for this.
I'm sure some of our Carlton specialists will recognise it.
I just thought it should be seen, not mine but the property of the restorer.

More info later

Re:

I spy braze-on centre-pulls (not Mafac, although the levers are) and an integral 531 seatpin.
An (easy) clean machine indeed.. if you have the parts to fit.
Cyclocross?

Re:

Yeah I wouldn't wish to cyclocross it the way it's set up now! I just thought that might have been the original purpose of the frame? Not necessarily. You don't have to be off-road for it to make sense to remove the frame/seatpin interface and the frame/brake interface from the roadspray line of fire.. (and save weight into the bargain.)

I'm trying to put a date to it.

1970's. Era of the MKM Ultimate?

Edit..

I recall seeing a fillet brazed carlton somewhere and tracked it down to Retrobike but the pics in the thread have expired, there are a couple of them on Google though.

Spokesmann on that thread recalls carlton did do some lugless stuff for cyclo-cross

Definitely an easy clean frame. Personally I would have preferred the rear brake cable to be fully covered, but maybe thats saving weight with not having another couple of extra brazed on cable guides 'he says tongue in cheek!'.

Re:

It seems that 3 of these were made for the Carlton team in 1971, this one the fourth for the late Ken Evans, editor of Cycling magazine.

The bike had been in my sister-in-law's roof void for close to 40 years, and when we got it out it had changed into a Raleigh.

The current owner was able to restore it with the help of a photograph I took in 1977 of Ken (when it was a Carlton) in a 25. A new genuine head badge was kindly supplied by Dave Marsh of the Universal Cycle Centre in Maltby, Rotherham

Back in the early 70s...

I have an image somewhere of a fillet brazed Continental finished in bright orange/red.
