Your other option is to do the reverse of what I did. Take the freehub off a rubbishy old 8-speed hub and put it on the 9-speed hub. As the 8-speed freehubs were steel they tend to be in very good condition even if the hub body is a bit tired. This will be simpler and probably cheaper than messing with Highpath spacers.

The one proviso is that your 9-speed hub must use the standard diameter axle not the later oversized one.

I have a spare 8-speed freehub as a result of changing to a 9/10/11 speed alloy one if you want to give it a try.

as an alternative, you can use a shimano 7 speed hub and cassette, as their 7 speed is spaced identically to campag 8 @ 5mm. you would of course lose one gear and have partial shimano, but its a go-er.
If you want to get clever use a shimano 8 hub, put your 7 speed cassette on it and see if you can get an extra bottom cog to give you 8 gears.

Yes, I've done that on my Olmo using a 126mm 7 speed Shimano Sante wheelset as I didn't want to respace that particular frame. Works perfectly and in Suffolk there's no reason to miss the 8th sprocket! For my latest build, a Chas Roberts, I really want to stick with Campag 8 speed as it fits the age of the frame.
