Campag 8 speed on 9 speed hub

This might seem an odd question, but bear with me. Although 8 speed Ergos are fairly common, 8 speed Campag hubs in good condition are not. I don't have a 9 speed Campag hub to experiment with, so has anyone tried using 9 speed cassette sprockets spaced with 8 speed spacers on a 9 speed hub. Far as I can tell a 9 speed cassette is about 1.3mm wider overall than the 8 speed so it might need an additional spacer.

If this would work it would simplify matters for me enormously! Any advice on alternative solutions very welcome.

never done it, but it is do'able
lots of info here at Highpath http://www.highpath.net/index.html
and the sell spacers to do the job

Knew I'd seen something before and I just found the Highpath site as your post came in! I think I'll try one of their solutions, I have too many 8 speed Campag Ergo setups to change over to 9 speed but the hubs are likely to be the first bits to go.

North of Essex, south of Suffolk - you need to get yourself round Mid Suffolk east of the A140 - cycling heaven, my mate and I can ride for 20 odd miles and maybe get overtaken by two cars!

just don't put 8s cogs on a 9s hub. they fit, but the shorter steel splines are intended for the steel 8s freehub body and will tear up the alloy 9s version.

as an alternative, you can use a shimano 7 speed hub and cassette, as their 7 speed is spaced identically to campag 8 @ 5mm. you would of course lose one gear and have partial shimano, but its a go-er.
If you want to get clever use a shimano 8 hub, put your 7 speed cassette on it and see if you can get an extra bottom cog to give you 8 gears.

Your other option is to do the reverse of what I did. Take the freehub off a rubbishy old 8-speed hub and put it on the 9-speed hub. As the 8-speed freehubs were steel they tend to be in very good condition even if the hub body is a bit tired. This will be simpler and probably cheaper than messing with Highpath spacers.

The one proviso is that your 9-speed hub must use the standard diameter axle not the later oversized one.

I have a spare 8-speed freehub as a result of changing to a 9/10/11 speed alloy one if you want to give it a try.

Campagnolo produced a spacer kit precisely for this job - take a 9 speed cassette, drop the biggest sprocket and fit 8 speed spacers. I still have the spacer kit and no longer have 8 speed so happy to let it go for a fiver incl postage - PM if interested

Spare part Kit-03, that was my other thought but I couldn't find any on the web so I assumed they were like rocking horse poo despite being listed in the current spares catalogue.

Sounds like the best bet.
