Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli took these photos from aboard the International Space Station as it orbited above the UK on a cloudless night...

...and here's London. I think Heathrow is on the top-right (bright yellow with two black bars) which would mean that this picture is taken from the north looking south...

Amazing pictures. It'll explain why I don't get to see many faint objects thanks to all that light pollution in the night sky. Glad to see that they are starting to turn some motorway lights off from midnight. The beginning of a new way of thinking I hope.
 
I read that either Sark or Alderney was trying to market itself as an international centre of astronomy, after installing street lighting that apparently doesn't cause any light pollution! :)
 
I've seen this picture on another forum and have the UK one as my desktop already. Cool aint it?

It's fantastic. Because the picture was taken so close to Kent & Sussex, I can make out the individual towns nearest to me.

Indeed it is. You can make out the Thames looping around the Isle of Dogs just left of the centre of the picture, and the dark strip of the Lea Valley leading back towards the camera.
