Bring out your multitools....!!!

I carry one for picnics mainly but:
have I ever used it on a ride? yes,
to remove the sleeve of a shirt to access a wound and to turn a back pack strap to a sling for a fallen rider (he wasn't riding with us, but not the point)
cutting a boot for a slashed tyre
removing a shard of glass from another tyre
cutting tie wraps to allow me to hang a caliper off the frame so the bike could be ridden.

it's a bit like a chain splitter, it should be exceptionally rare to use it, but when you do, there is no other tool that will do the job.
Edit to add, it's only in my offroad pack, the road bindle doesn't have one because I've never needed to use one on a road ride, however I will put one in on epic rides (multiple day rides or stupid long ones that are +100miles)

Of course this is a multitool. But only for trailwork not trail riding...

doesn't work with modern electronic shifters.

can't fix it with a hammer, must be an electrical fault.

when we did dig (nothing compared to modern folks who will dig were digging isn't needed to make a perfect track) I used to carry a hatchet. it could do what the hammer could, but it could also do what the hammer couldn't.

Yep I have covered the whole digging thing in another thread. It’s becoming slightly weird...my 16 year old will complain about a corner in the woods if it hasn’t got a supportive berm. Youth, Eh?

Back to topic ... with square taper BBs, if we were on a Very Long Haul day in a group and somewhere isolated, I would carry a 14mm socket and a head which could be used with an 8mm Allen key. This saved the day on more than one occasion and prevented people having The Walk of Shame.

It had to be one of these thin-wall 3/8 drive though, otherwise would not run inside the cranks.

I only carry an Opinel if I am having bread and cheese. Or doing some hunting for Boletus.

I use mine as main knife for preparing food and eating on bike tours. Perfect, a pleasure to use, and light. And a couple of sporks. One titanium and one plastic.

Touring tool kit is more extensive with spare chain, quiklinks, tube, multi tools etc

Gosh Adrian that NOS Cool Tool is a very cool tool.

Did they do a 14mm socket add on? I remember a friend took an angle grinder to theirs so that they could use the adjustable for tightening cranks. Can’t remember that working....
