Breeze Lightning Prototype

Repack Rider

Senior Retro Guru
I lived next door to Joe Breeze for a couple of years, from 1991 to 1993. When Joe was getting the Lightning ready for production, he needed one to use for his catalog photos, and this was the bike he used.

If the paint around the head tube seems a little sloppy, it is. Joe painted the head tube white, then mocked up the rest of the spearpoint design with white tape. There are still scratches in the paint where he cut the edges of the tape.

After the catalog shoot, Joe had no more use for the bike and one of my friends needed a bike, so I put the two together and my friend ended up with the bike.

My friend didn't really use this bike much, and it has hung in his garage for most of the time since.

Keep it, clean it and enjoy it. That bike has got history. I like it, no frills, a proper bike

Hey CK-

Does the guy want to sell it?

I'd gladly strip it down and do a little restoration on it right down to the white tape work. :)

Here are some photos that Sky Yeager (formerly US product manager of Bianchi, now of Swobo Bikes) she took on Bolinas Ridge in 1990. I think I used the photo of me onboard for a Hite-Rite ad. True, the spears and diamonds were mocked up with white tape.

Welcome to the site Joe!

Love the pics - I always thought that the spears were one of the nicest paint styles of the era!

Out of interest - what do you think of the new maveric speedball seatposts that do the job of ahite-right for about 50 x the weight and cost?

Ps - as one of the few xtracycle converts in the UK Can I just say how excited and pleased I was to see the uptown & xtracycle!

thinking about it it really is spectacular to have the origional photos and the bike built-up and ready 17 years later!

Hey Joe!
Mavic still makes pretty good stuff IMHO.
Maybe you meant Maverick? i bet you did.
I never tried any of the 2 options you opose but you might have a clue (although i ride full suspension with disc brakes) :)
