BOTM isnt about the thread, the owner, or how fat or skinny his wallet is. Its about a range of bikes to look at, once a month, and having the fun of choosing OUR favourite, based on our personal criteria.

The rest is just semantics.

Amen to that

People,

Dont make it harder for people to want to start a thread on topic about there bike either.

I can assure you, im not the longest standing member, but im proud to say, ive been here 10 years, its a "READERS BIKE MTB" thread section, not everyone has the skill set to, take a wreck and refurb every component and photograph and then discuss.

it doesnt matter how you do a thread, build or otherwise, in ten years, some threads, ive simply taken pictures, some threads show the build, some a comparison at similar price points, some from purchase to full strip and restoration, some with an intense amount of history long forgotten, and some with all of the above combined, and some Botm entries and winners with no threads at all.

There is no RHYME or REASON.

BOTM isnt about the thread, the owner, or how fat or skinny his wallet is. Its about a range of bikes to look at, once a month, and having the fun of choosing OUR favourite, based on our personal criteria.

The rest is just semantics.

Confused post is confused. So what are you saying? Follow the rules? Don't follow the rules? Eat some cheese?

What Rule....?

Rule 4. It is strongly suggested all bikes are placed in the reader's bikes section prior to entry into BoTM. In this way a bike can under go a more gentle critique prior to the spotlight and interest of BoTM. More detail and extra pictures can be added here.

A thread is a thread, it its doesn't have to display building or resurrecting a bike, or the person fettling a bike.

And i never considered it a rule either, more a suggestion. ( happy to stand corrected on this). A place where conversation and critic can be posted, and a more detailed way to show the bike, spec etc etc.

Re:

FWIW...........for years, BOTM and BOTY has been won with and without an accompanying Thread.

If the general consensus is that I shouldn’t bother then so be it.

Dude, the general consensus I'm sure is that you do a great job... personally I love the theme months.
Although I do wonder if more of a heads up might help boost the numbers, perhaps at the start of the month prior? It might also help with defining the criteria before the start of the comp as well.

I don’t think it’s a bad theme, just a little confusing (as raidan73 himself kinda admits), so we are debating it whilst entrants are offering up their bikes and it has resulted in some being withdrawn/accepted/disqualified.
But so far we have 8 bikes to choose from and I’m already torn between two!

I like the idea of knowing what the theme is in advance as it gives an opportunity to prepare. I’ve only entered one bike to date (Muddyfox), but I would have done so earlier had it not been for a couple of theme months for which it wouldn’t have qualified. I was just typical for me that it got entered in the standard month that regan_ev just so happened to have his C26 replica ready for  (perhaps he feared entering it in a themed month... ;) ).
Ironically my Muddyfox in standard spec would be the epitome of blue collar, and at the time I owned one in the 90’s I upgraded the low end Suntour parts to higher end Shimano. The bike as specced now is definitely more white collar...

How about a yearly format something like this;

Jan & Feb: Standard months
March: Themed month
April & May: Standard months
June: Themed month
July & Aug: Standard months
Sept: Themed month
Oct & Nov: Standard months
Dec: Themed month

A selection of themes for the year could be proposed (and debated no doubt) in January, and polled at the same time as BOTY, with the most popular 4 carried forward to each of the theme months.

A “No NOS or For Display Only” themed month would rule out the majority of garage queens... :p
