I was once pushed into the canal by a beered up squaddie while cycling home. Unlucky for him the police caught him five minutes later and he eventually ended up paying me £500 in compensation. Another time after being mugged and beaten for my bike by three guys, two of them threatened to drown me in the canal. Thankfully got out of that one by grabbing one of them on the basis that if I was going into the water, then they were joining me for a swim.
Canals are not my favourite way of getting around cities. Limited policing, narrow paths alongside a body of water, often very poor lighting and too many places for scumbags to hide and jump out on you.
