thanks for your help, chaps. problem solved with the black record stem now. it had been slipping ever since i fitted it (NOS) back in the early spring. i tried coke can shims to no avail. i eventually got a strip of coke can around 5cm X 1cm and repeatedly folded it into around 1 1/2cm lengths on itself and then pack it in behind the internal wedge as a shim. now the 6mm bolt tightens up the wedge nicely against the bars and no more slippage!!

i'm sure i can expect lots of creaking on the hills tho'!!
