Best (retro) shoes for cleats & toe clips?

So, I have a mid-90s Cougar with Shimano EX600 Ultegra but modern pedals that I considering swapping to Shimano pedals with toe clips and cleats. I am less comfortable in clipless SPDs but very happy in toe clips. It occurred to me that most modern shoes look a bit odd with an older bike and toe clips so is there a style of shoe I should look for to wear on a retro bike?

I had a pair of specialized boots, dont recalk the modem as they have long to the retro ride in the sky.

They seem to have thinner soles as no cut out for cleat plus the toe was was less built to allow easy inzertion and withdrawl into the pedal straps, the latter would be important to you.
