I'm thinking of a new project and fancy building a weight weenie singlespeed. Now I know weight weenie can be a little pointless if you're a few kg over weight but I fancy it purely as a project.

Now the question is what frame to start with? I don't have much to spend so want something cheap and light and rigid. Not bothered about brand so unfashionable brand may be the best route.

Any suggestions to make and model?

find your self a Cannondale to start with, they came in huge numbers so a nice used example would be a good start.

the 2.8 series frames are lightest of the older ones
but any are light

any alloy frame will do most are about 4lb

a cheap GT avalanche or similar will do

saracen did a magnesium frame that weight 2.6lbs in 17" and was stiff and responsive and very unpopular as they where saracen bloody nice frames there's a guy ride round my way on one (not seen him in a while) he got it from bankrupt cycles (who what ever they are) for £39 posted buy it now

gotta be worth a look

Orange O2 comes in about 3.4lb - or 1560g
I got mine for about £60 i think.

I would also suggest a GT aluminium frame, I scored an Avalanche for something like £30, then built it up for my workmate as a sub 25lb 1x8 for around £100 total with a toolbox bits thrown in..

If steel is more your bag then KHS frames are well worth a look as well ;)
