Billy Hughes' prejudices are well known. His treatment of John Monash was appalling and he was a staunch proponent of the White Australia Policy. He was at best an incompetent prime minister. He was a power mad parasite of the political classes who, as a wheezy little old man, twice put the country to (unsuccessful) referendum about conscripting young men to fight in a war that would ultimately rob the nation of most of a generation voluntarily.
