Hi i thought i would post this in case other people are wanting to do something similar with there bike parts,

I bought a GT Zaskar Le of here a week or two ago

Although i was happy with my buy the Anodising had wear for a 13 year old frame so i started looking at the possibilities for what i could do with the frame. I decided on stripping off the anodising from the frame, I could have taken it to a local firm but they wanted 35 - 40 pounds to carry this out, So i did some research on the net and discovered that Caustic Soda strips it straight off (Sodium Hydroxide) or in domestic terms Oven Cleaner.

I was straight of the Techno Tesco’s and bought a can of Mr Muscle oven cleaner pictured below, also I would advise on taking the advise on the can wear gloves and defiantly wear a mask, also help things along with a oven scouring pad.

I proceeded to start stripping the frame with mr muscle and although the picture below is impressive I used nearly a full can on the area shown and boy did it take some effort and at £2.50 a tin this was going to cost some money maybe the local firm was a better option after all or was it .

I them went shopping at the weekend and forgot all about my stripping until I was in my local Wilkinson’s store and spotted this on the shelf for £1.15 a tin

So I bought 2 cans and started stripping again and I purposely left the decals on at the first stages so you can see the effect it has, it will probably need 2 – 3 applications before you get to the alloy on Zaskars as the Anodising seams quite good,

You will be able to physically see the effects as the oven cleaner will start to turn the colour of the anodising

The results were fantastic shown below, left for the same period of time as Mr Muscle 30 – 45 min I then proceeded to get the kitchen scouring pad on and within no time at all I was down to the alloy. I have still got a way to go yet and I will post my final results up but this stuff realy works great and I would estimate it would only take 3 – 4 Tins to complete at a cost of £4.60 and a bit of time of course.

Be aware that on bare alloy the oven cleaner will leave a black deposit but this will clean off after.

Hope this helps someone out,

Might try this on my anodised black +40mm IS to IS Hope adaptor. Can only seem to find them in black :(

Well unfortunately I was defeated by the anodising on the frame it started to strip of lovely and very easily at the beginning and then just wouldn’t shift.
I spent ages trying and nothing, the areas were around welds etc and tricky little bit like the cable guides etc. However the frame is being stripped as we speak by a local firm near me for £25 so can’t grumble it would have been nice to do it myself but it’s a lot of effort to do a whole frame and I lost patience and I was spending to much time on it.

It’s a great method of stripping don’t get me wrong but big items take loads of effort it would be ideal for leavers pedals cranks etc and you could put them in to tubs to do the stripping and keep reapplying the cleaner, I should be getting the frame back on Friday so should be interesting to see the final result. One frame down another to tackle.

Why didn't you go to the chemist from the start and get caustic soda ?

at some point people will realise oven cleaner only has less than 5% of the stuff in it

and using an abrasive paste isn't polishing , it's nothing more than cleaning the layer of oxidization off the surface ; polishing is taking every single imperfection from the piece and leaving a flat mirror shine

Theres no secret to starting with the grit that best matches the worst mark on what you want polished , then working your way through the grades finishing with an abrasive paste to give a shine to a surface you have made flat .

I was unaware I could by it at a chemist, but I was under the impression it had to be mixed with another solution to strip it off, and also it would need to be put into a bath and I didnt have anything big enough to put the frame in , or would it be a case of simply brushing it onto a frame?? Thought for the future though.
