Advice on modernising a 90s Marin

unscrew the tops, turn them upside down and pump the oil out.
undo the foot nut on either leg (and don't snap the pump rod) and slide the stanchions out. give everything a good clean.
rebuild. add fresh 5w oil. ride them.

you could replace the seals, but meh. you could replace the bushes but meh.
they really are a very simple fork design that's pretty damn bomb proof.

Haha British oppression steel feels right for the current climate. I’ve ordered some oil so I’ll give that a go , cheers

Do you need to measure how much oil you put back in?

Yes, but usually is a cc measure put in with bombers, the manual will tell you how much or the link above, click on oil level and then 2001 select the model.
If you don't know the model..... You know how to find out.

Also it is 7.5wt standard and 10 to 15wt if you have a lot more in the large rucksack to carry along ;-) like an average retrobiker.
There may be a tuning guide too.

fluffychicken is right at 7.5w, but I always found that to be too heavy for me. having said that, I never used Marzocchi's own oil, I use motorbike fork oil because 1. I'm tight and 2. I tended to have a few litres of the stuff in stock.

I finally got round to doing the eldridge grade that I initially started this thread about. Thanks for all your help, especially @Tootyred for sending me a nice headset and giving much needed advice! The bike is for my friend who is moving to Switzerland and wanted something to ride round the city, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
