hmm it shouldnt do that, you have got the cage slap bang parrel with the chainring havent you?
if you just have 2x up front you just use the 1 first click on the shifter. with the cable off the front mech and in lowest gear on the back use the low screw on the front mech to bring the cage as up close to the chain as possible so its just off rubbing then put the cable on it and retension the cable until it shifts up to the big ring
