I've had my 1998 Kona Hahanna since 2008, and it's seen several changes in that time. I used it as my main/only MTB, so I opted for a retro-mod setup, with modern components until I finally retired it in favour of a bike with rear disk compatibility. I couldn't bring myself to part with it, however, so I rebuilt it into a single speed commuter, which I use more than any of my other bikes.

Here is the first build in 2008:

Then by 2009 she looked like this:

In 2010 I decided to go for a modern respray as the original red was getting quite tired:

In 2011, the final iteration before I replaced the Kona as my main MTB:

In 2014, the SS rebuild:

Then, at the beginning of this year I started dabbling in Carbon Fibre parts, and it became an addiction, so now the bike has CF bars, seatpost and forks. Pictures to follow.

I'm open to any questions about the different builds, and I hope you enjoy this post.

Looks like Edinburgh or maybe Bath from the pic? :)

Andy

It is indeed Edinburgh :)
I hope to have some pictures of the latest setup with the carbon fibre bits and an HS33 hydraulic rim brake on the rear.

Re:

So the hahanna has been replaced on daily commuting duties, but I'm never going to get rid of it, so it's going to become a cruiser/leisure bike with swept bars and wider tyres. It'll keep the magura rim brake, and has been fitted with a nice Shimano hydraulic front disk brake. I'm going to fit some nice ergo lock on grips and hopefully some tan sidewall dmr supermoto tyres to round out the cruiser inspired look.

Re:

I've fitted the swept bars and ergo grips, and procured a 1.75 marathon plus tyre to be fitted, but wasn't able to find a second one at the same time in the bike station (a great second hand bike charity in Edinburgh). Here is the Kona in its current state. In addition to the bars and grips, I may run it 1x9 if I find myself going on bike-packing adventures in the future.

Winter update 2018:
I last used this bike for a bike packing trip in March, and I now intend to acquire a 29er for xc and bikepacking use, so this bike and the Voodoo Wanga stand to be made redundant, but as I'm somewhat attached to this one, I can't bring myself to sell it.
Due to his bike being written off in a crash, my old man needs a bike for commuting duties on a temporary basis for now, and I've lent him the Kona. That way the bike stays in the family and it gets him out of a tight spot. After using it in my touring configuration, he has asked for a suspension fork, so that has led to this new iteration of the Kona hahanna.
