1998 Cannondale Heatubes, and steerer tensioning?

I've got a 1998 Super V size small with some knackered forks.

Does anyone know if the headtubes varied in size for the different sized frames?

IE if I pick up a contemporary fork of a bigger bike will it fit the small?

One other Q, there is no starnut on the cannondale forks, how do I tension the steerer?

From memory it was a 1 1/4 headtube and they will vary in length from frame to frame.

As for tensioning, I seem to remember just pressing down hard on the stem and hoping for the best.

There are headset reducers if you decide to run other forks

As LGF said, you'll need a reducer headset to run a "normal" fork. You'll also need a normal stem and use a star nut or steerer wedge to tension as usual.
You can get spacers to work with your current headset but I can bet the bearings are pretty shot anyway.

But to answer your original question, if it is the headshok compatible head tube, which it will be on a super v, then all the head tubes are the same length and any headshok fork (p-bone, fatty etc.) will fit.

The bearings are an interference fit on the steerer so there is no need to tension/preload them.

If you want to fit a normal fork though then as mentioned you'll need to get a reducer. They use a proprietary cannondale headset to fit the 1.56 inch steerer of headshok and lefty forks, but the headtube itself is compatible with normal 1.5 inch headsets (and matching reducer headsets) but you need to be careful not to get one with deep insertion cups as some older dale head tubes the recess is shallower than normal
