Rocky Mountain Fan
So I have this bike friend, he lives in the middle of nowhere, in a very small town where the Rocky Mountains meet the Alberta Prairie. We trade texts semi-often when he gets something he doesn't know about, or if there's something I might be interested in. He just likes working on bikes, he fixes them up and sells them in his retirement, he gets his bikes from near small-town metal recyclers. He gets the weirdest stuff, it's amazing what people throw away. This time I reached out to him after seeing one of his ads for a BSO with Kona Dewey bar ends, I asked him if he'd remove them for me. We agreed to a price, and he was coming my way for an appointment so he could even deliver. When he got to my place I asked him if he needed anything from a pile I had set aside to donate or toss. He answered "I'll take it all, anything you don't want", so we filled his truck. While standing in front of my small collection of Rocky Mountian's he says " I have this Trek 820 with a stuck seat post you might be interested in, I'll take a picture when I get home and send it to you".
A short while later he sends me these asking if I'd want either of them in exchange for the parts I gave him.
I don't know why he mentioned the Trek... I could hardly contain myself, a few days later I drove out to pick it up. (I brought a few more parts and frames from him for more Karma points in the future)
Got it back to my popcorn facility to check it out- Apart from missing it's back wheel/tire and a replacement front tire, it's 100% original and in very good shape. A few small scratches and scrapes, some decals peeling here and there but nothing major. The seat is toast though.
What's with the serial number? I'd assume this would have been longer, were these not overseas frames?
So far I'm into this for $0 CAD- Time to tear it down and start cleaning. I think I pretty much have what I need to build this up apart from a wheelset. I have some options there to build a set (never built a set before but would love to learn), In the meantime I have a set of Mavic x221's that I'll put on to get it rolling. I want to try to build this with as little money as possible (I'm starting a business times are tight).
I have a few Flilte seats I could put on that would look awesome, but that's no fun- So I went to the thrift store and bought a feux seude ladies purple jacket for $2.80 and got to work.
