Ok, so now the last of the visiting family have left, I was allowed a little bike time. All the graphics have now been touched up and then covered with a super thin layer of polycarb protection film.
Next job is to tackle the scratches to the anodised aluminium, easier said than done.... obviously solid colour won’t work, nor a metallic/pearl. I’ve seen some frames touched in with nail varnish but this tends to be too shiny and too thick.
So I thought I’d try Lefranc & Bourgois “purple” Glass & Tile transparent paint.......
A little test on the offside chain stay proved reasonable. Not concourse perfect, but reasonably tidy and less distracting than the raw ally scratches.

So I thought I’d start the build with the front end…..

But stumbled at the first hurdle… :roll: as after a cursory wipe, the Quadra 10’s proved a lot rougher than I’d initially thought, although the elastomers look fine I couldn’t reach down to the bottom inside bolt for a full strip.. that will have to wait for a long series 4mm allen key. :|



On to the headset, most of which cleaned up rather well for something that looked un-serviced for 26 years! Bottom ring of caged balls had gone west though..



Stem just needed some nasty stickers removing and a proper clean…


All steel bolts and clips will spend the night in some rust converter.

The B.B. cleaned up just fine and is still nice and smooth. I’m not surprised to see it wasn’t the XT version even though the bike is advertised as “XT equipped”

Am I correct in thinking the UN51 was the “DX”?

Greasy crap covered parts often look like bin fodder but in actual fact are protected from rot and corrosion by all that mess sitting on top, great save their, I’ve following this thread for a while now - I have to ask “where did you find out about opaque purple tile glaze / paint as a suitable substitute for anno ?

I’m not sure I’d use the words “suitable substitute” more appropriate would be “reasonable bodge”! :facepalm:

I work in an industry that comes in contact with a whole range of artisans, so the glass paint was just something I’d stumbled across in the past and I thought it might do a better job than nail varnish....
