You will need spacer with a 7 speed cassette.
The XTR hubs were designed for 8sp.
Personally I would use early 2000 XT/LX 9sp shifter and a 9 speed cassette.
They are nice and go with the other stuff on there. They also shouldn't have a price premium of early 90s stuff.
That are try the 8sp M737, rather than the older 730 7sp stuff.
Unless you want to be 1992/3 era.

Thanks again, fluffychicken. Have now found an xtr m900 rear mech! So, would like to buy NEW 8 speed chain and cassette, can you tell me what the new equivalents are, (don't think I can get an m900 cassette new)?

Hg50 or PG850 I think are codes, something like that (shimano and SRAM)

Nothing is equivalent as you cannot buy any on the then pioneering aluminium spiders.

That's ok then, as I have just bought a sram pg850 cassette and chain!
Think I may have sourced an xtr m950 shifter too.
