This would of been something that was found on a bike of this nature in 1983. We are taking inspiration from the Breezer from the Steve Banks collection.

I purchased this frame from the original owner, it did not include any parts however nor did the owner have any photos of the bike left from when it was originally built up.

The shifter mod is a slick upgrade and it is detail that does not compromise the period correctness of the bike.

In which case a super record headset would also be correct and a slick upgrade over the steel one. Super record headsets were common place by 1980 as the Super record group more or less became the favoured group in the pro peleton by 1978. In fact, I would argue the super record to be more appropriate for the build if one which to build it with the trickest components of the day. Alloy Dura-ace with the weird shaped nuts could also fit the bill.

Joe himself specifically noted that they used the steel ones because they were more durable for the MTB abuse than the light alloy road ones.

Repop ≠ 100% correct

The "banks" collection is full of examples of bad builds

Your point is noted Hollister. I understand that the collection is not a solid reference by any means. I am simply pointing out that the Breezer has this mod and it is original to that build.

We could source originals and pay $$$ but TD is able to machine these in his garage. It's a mod that will make our bike slightly different and we are having fun with it. It's a bike we will own for a very long time and this is simply how we want to do it. TD is the most knowledgable person I know when it comes to bikes of this period and I trust his expert opinion.

Fair enough on the original spec of a NR headset, I'd recommend it for actual riding too. It is a way more durable headset than the Super Record which develops bearing divots rather rapidly. I just wanted to make the point it was no more period correct than a Super Record. I think you'll even find super record headsets on ritcheys from that period.

Understood..... this bike has been a great eduction in history from both TD and Joe. We are taking inspiration from Joe specifically on how and why he built and spec'd the Breezers.

Attached is a photo of Joe's original spec sheet (I posted this earlier in this thread as well). Note the "Steel" Campy headset notation. This is why we swapped out the alloy one to the Steel as Joe would have spec'd. This should clear up any grey areas.

Modification of a Dura Ace EX seatpost head from a bolt size of M8 x 1 to M8 x 1.25 to accept the standard bolt of a Breeze Cycles seat sandwich.

This allows you to run a Brooks B-72 Saddle.

Thank you very much to TD, at Vintage MTB Workshop for helping us with this restoration. It has been an amazing learning experience and my appreciation for the early mountain bikes has gone to another level. This bike would never have been made possible if it wasn't for TD's extensive knowledge and connections within the collector's community. Thank you!

This bike is hands down my favorite bike in our collection.... You know that feeling after you finish a bike and you just can't stop staring at it.... you keep leaving the garage and then coming back to check in on it again.... yep that is happening right now.
