Shimano runs at 4.8mm for the spacing on 8spd. I dont know what a Shimano 600 freewheel is but given how stuff shifts at home I think its no more than 5mm - Sheldon lists 5.5mm but doesnt specifically mention mid 1980's Shimano which went from 6 to 7 to 8spd very quickly

The floating top jockey appeared for the slant parallelogram model year to aid the indexing which had a patented 2mm side to side movement

A 10 spd cassette slots straight onto old 8spd hubs and you can use the original 600, 105 and DA rear mechs from about 1986 with 10spd road shifters

My 1980's Clements with 1987 Deore MT-60 r-mech, SRAM 10spd cassette and DA 10spd bar-end shifter

On this old 60’s girl? Yes, which is something I don’t feel the need to do. I’m happy with the ratios I’ve got and don’t really feel the need for more.
I won’t be climbing and rushing through the fun twisty bits of the Yorkshire Wolds like I try to do on my 10x2 DuraAce equipped 80’s Colstar in the dry, this bike will mainly get ridden in all weathers on the flat plain of Holderness, nice 15 mile pootle to the Cafe Velo in Beverley for coffee, cake & a warm up!

Narrow modern gold coloured KMC chain & the use of an old brake noodle internal tube in the BB guide has certainly made shifting more comfortable, so has a 90’s Brooks B17.
& best of all, no money spent as it was all out of the spares box

Picked myself up a 50’s/60’s Brooks saddlebag support cheap on eBay, bit rusty but nothing beyond a little chemical trickery & elbow grease.
Now I have an increased capacity next time I pop down to the pie shop!
