£5 from the tip...

I was taking some of the kids old toys to the recycling facility at my local tip when my attention strayed, nay, was deliberately focused on the pile of bikes available. I noticed the green Reynolds 531 badge first then on closer inspection the xt mechs, hubs and bear traps etc. £5 and fair words exchanged for the rusty begger. Just time for a quick clean tonight. The frame's quite scabby with some scary looking corrosion on the BB shell- I'll this investigate tomorrow to see how bad it is. The components don't seem to be unduly worn. Despite the brand might it have been a reasonable bike in it's day?

Blimey, wish I had such luck at the tip ;)

My mate had one of these when I had a Falcon Beartrap, always loved the smokey paint on these. Great find that. Hope you can save the frame.

Great find!

Cheers

I stripped it today to see what was what. Everything dismantled ok apart from the SKF bottom bracket which had plastic collars, still nothing seized which is a result.
It's lost some of it's full XTness over the years- the m091 Sti's have had the thumbies ground off, which explains why it has Deore thumbies now- they're good though:)

It's also lost the 730 chainset having a lx500 one instead, again it's ok and for 5 Sovs I can't grumble.

The frame is tatty but the corrosion is only on the surface.
Rest of the spec is 730 hubs / rx-7 rims, 735 mechs and some cool black 732 wide profile cantilevers oh and xt bear traps.

The Tioga Avenger stem is not original (or is it?) and neither are the Scott Brahma style bars (funny I was looking for a pair of these last year, don't need them now though)

So for £5 - ace!

What to do with it now I'm not sure. It's my size so maybe it will replace my Dawes Countryman as the happy shopper/pub bike. The Dawes is great but too big really. I'd probably single speed it...
