Holy Smoke….. Its only taken me over 30 years - 1990 17” Diamond Back Ascent EX.

A friend had one of these BITD, when I was riding the neon yellow Trek 830 with Exage. I envied his Deore and Smoke tires.

Best modern 26 rim brake rim

Yeah, but they're on a tandem. And I don't think they're that much worse than the Araya 1.75 that was on there before.

Best modern 26 rim brake rim

I’ve got a pair of velo orange voyagers and they built up into quite mice wheels. A little spendy.

For Sale Berthoud Aspin Open Saddle VGC

Selling a lightly used Berthoud Aspin Open -- I'd say VGC, as there's one mark on the rails, but otherwise looks basically new. It's got about 1000km on it, and sadly, it's not really the right shape for me. €125

    Why the crazy chainline?

The Rene Herse tandems run the drive chain from the Captain's crank as well. The only think I can think of is front shifting, because they had the lever based front mechs.

For Sale Glenn Erikson Custom steelframe

Erickson made absolutely lovely frames. Couldn’t afford one when I was in Seattle, but I really wanted one.

1980s Dave Yates Road Bike - Wheel Conundrum

What will work? Almost anything that you can physically fit on there, if you have the HG threads for the lockring, it will work. If not, uniglide on the back. Any 8sp chain would probably do it. I ran mine with a super mismatched drivetrain and it worked pretty well. (even, at one point, running...

1980s Dave Yates Road Bike - Wheel Conundrum

There are 28t cogs out there -- this is what I have on my DA uniglide hub. (Not NOS, Knackered old stock is probably more like it. It was second hand used and came with a cross bike.)

1980s Dave Yates Road Bike - Wheel Conundrum

I’ve got a duraace uniglide hub and a bunch of cogs for it (somewhere). The uniglide cassettes are actually separate cogs, with no ramps. They’re full tooth height old style steel cogs, not the cut down ramped ones that started with hyperglide, Hyperglide cassettes won’t fit, because the spline...

    Scott AT-4 Handlebars

I had the AT4-pros + a set of arm rests on my trek 830 back in the day, mainly used on the road. I really liked them, and got totally used to riding down in the aero bar position. It was a total pain in the ass getting the brakes around the corners though.

    Frame failure experiences

I had a steel Trek 830 frame fatigue crack through the chainstay at the bridge. Probably 7-8k miles on it when it happened. Had a AL Redline/Kinesis cross frame develop a fatigue crack in the seat tube at the BB weld. No idea on the mileage there, I probably had 5k on it, but it was a former...

    Show us your Gravel Bikes

Got this to see if the whole wider tire thing worked for me. 7500 miles on -- this is probably it's best config with a 650x42 on it.

    Chain ring assistance

Rings and cassette look pretty worn. Inner chainring might be alright, as sometimes they’re the only steel ones in the set.

    Paris Olympics

Carlin's sprints were both a bit messy -- the semifinal probably could have had a relegation either way. That bronze medal incidenty though, that should have gotten him relegated. It certainly would have been the end of my evening when I was racing, because Phil the Commissar didn't put up with...

    Paris Olympics

It's all been good (except for the commissars, the poor Canadian Women's team pursuit got the bell 2 laps late, and the elimination was ... interesting). Lavreysen just seemed to be cruising in his heats. At some point he's going to have to go full gas. The whole omnium on one night was...
