    Bar ends yay or nay?

Yeah but they don't work with hydraulic brakes which would be a total show stopper for me. You can have my Hope brakes when you pry them from my cold dead hands. I must admit those are very pretty though, Mmmm Anodized purple Mmmm, I'd forgotten they ever existed, much nicer than bolt-on...

GT Zaskar idealised specification.. show me yours..

I love it, it's the first time I've seen another Zaskar with Rigida CSB rims, I thought I was the only one. They are a rather heavy rim but boy are they bomb proof, I run a pair and have never had to true them up in over 20+ years of riding.

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Won't they put a twisting force onto the brake leaver when you pull on them from the bar ends ? I'm guessing this is primarily for long distance rides where you want a change of hand position but still be able to operate your brakes. Personally I only ever use my bar ends when climbing and if...

GT Zaskar idealised specification.. show me yours..

As others have said XT/XTR is a good reliable groupset to use. My Zasker from back in the day wears XT front mech, XTR rear mech, XT rapidfire shifters, Hope headset, Hope hubs, Bolt-on rear disc conversion, Kona project II fork with my own welded on disc mount, Yeti grips, Dean seat post, TI...

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Weird I never thought to do that, I just always bought open ended grips because I wanted to use them with bar ends. Just had a mad thought, did any of you ever fit grips on your bar ends ? I considered it but never tried it because I only ever use the bar ends when climbing and didn't really...

Give 3 Examples. Why Retrobikes are awesome

I'd never really thought about it that way but thinking back you are right, me and everyone I knew customised their bikes with whatever "go faster" or favourite anodised colour bits they liked to create the bike of their dreams, now they are all sheep...

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Ahh, sorry I did not know that, in that case it's either butcher the grips or swop them for some open ones.

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Why would you cut down the grips ? I've always just slid everything in on the handlebar 3/4" or so to allow the bar end room to clamp on.

Shimano Parallax - what does it mean?

Keeping it simple, if you look at a non-disc front wheel then the flanges on the hub are equally spaced either side of the hub's center line so the spokes end up being exactly the same length with the same tension when the rim is trued properly. However with the rear you tend to get longer...

Why are thumb shifters so prized in the retrobike community?

I'd try to get used to them first since that is the cheapest option, if you don't like them then change... As far as I know it's only ever been 1 click down but several is possible when going up the cassette. Actually it kinda makes sense that it only moves 1 click at a time going down as it...

Why are thumb shifters so prized in the retrobike community?

If you set up your mechs properly in the first place the indexing just works and you can enjoy the ride. Personally I welcomed the demise of thumb shifters and the improvement that rapidfire shifting brought to cycling. When your bouncing around on the gnarly stuff getting a perfect gear change...

For those who know how to braze

That only works for welding if there is no wind, it's amazing how little breeze is needed to mess up the shielding gas. I keep an old stick welder around mainly for the outside jobs or the odd cast repair. @CROB Just a thought since @bikeworkshop mentioned fire safety above, it's good practice...

For those who know how to braze

I don't think TIG is that expensive, as long as you don't want to weld aluminium then a DC set with HF start is all you need, you can pick up a decent brand second hand for £200. On top of that you'll need filler rods, tungstens, bottle of argon gas, TIG gauntlets and a face mask. You only have...

For those who know how to braze

Don't believe the guff about TIG being hard, if you have good hand coordination it's not that hard to master. Yes lessons will help but just a few hours one on one with someone who can TIG weld would be enough to get you started. In a way TIG and brazing are kinda the same process, I'm right...

    96 Zaskar LE Build

That's come up lovely, given it's a 96 LE I'm interested to see what you do with it 'cos I've owned the exact same frame, year & size since 1996 when I bought mine new. Although I think they look ace polished mine will forever remain dull as I feel too conspicuous on a polished bike. These...

Is anyone else as sad as me?

My first "proper bike" was a 10 speed racer hand me down from my cousin who'd done the Interrail thing with it all over France and when I first started riding it I had the seat slammed. Had to sit on the cross bar and lean the bike to reach the floor until I grew longer legs. When I switched to...

    Karma Shimano XT Freehub M737A

I bought this rear hub new back in 1996, built it up a rear wheel that I used for a few months then replaced it with a Hope disc hub instead. So it's been sat in its original box for the last 28 years. Recently found it and given that it seems to be not worth much I thought I'd let it go for...

    Shimano XT Freehub M737A (1995-96)

Given nobody offered any idea of how much this is worth I had a look on flea-bay and it seems to be anywhere between £20 to £90, but I suspect the £90 is unrealistically optimistic. I'll create a post in the for sale section...
