Pink sparkles are actually not that far off the mark. There's a purple-tinted clear coat with flecks in it. Check out the pic:
How's your progress with the decals?
Not yet. Still refining it with a high-resolution printer. It's not exactly an urgent project! BTW: You'll need to be able to print white to get right.
Thanks for helping, Kult Friction. May your barn always be full of awesome bikes!
I've never seen a Mountec before and thought the graphics were pretty cool. I hadn't noticed the fork was on backwards!
Thank you,
Andre.
Hi all,
I found this awesome looking MTB from the 90's and wonder what exactly it is. I can barely read the stuff on the side, but I'm betting someone here knows exactly what it is.
Please help!
Thanks very much,
Andre.
Hi!
I've finally dug my Apex frame out from the back of my storage locker and traced the decals in Illustrator. It was incredibly easy as all but the P in Apex is exactly the same as the Ascent EX. Took a few hours to verify the shapes and alignments then got my Pantone book out and changed the...
Re: Re:
I've heard of the acetylene torch thing but thought they used it to ignite the clearcoat/paint? I hadn't thought of them simply applying the smoke to the (still wet?) paint or clearcoat!
Have you seen the 1989 Diamond Backs in person to compare the effect you created with the one...
Re: Re:
Yes!!!! I've seen your Axis. Have all the pics downloaded three years ago. I wish I could see it up close and personal! I'd like to copy those decals too in order to re-create the bike. I'd especially like to get a magnified look at the paint job! The Axis Team has a similar marble...
Hi,
I've managed to reproduce the decals from the Ascent EX, as mentioned last week viewtopic.php?f=1&t=295828 and today I finished the Axis Team! I've got an Apex frame that I'm going to do next. Does anyone have an Axis that I can have a look at, or buy?
Best,
Andre.
Thanks for the tip about Gill!
Smokey effect, as far as I know was done with a torch igniting the paint or clearcoat and allowed to burn and then deposit back onto the frame! I'm going to have to do some more poking around for that one!
Best,
Andre.
Hello!
I've been away for a while, but am still passionate about those 1989 DB's! I've been thinking of restoring a 1989 Ascent EX, but need to get the paint and decals right. I think I've finally got the latter nailed down real good! I have some rusted, scratched & dented beat-up frames that I...
The Bike is a 1989 DB Apex and appears to have all original components except for tires and bar-ends. These come-up very rarely--ssk the seller to ship to you.
Hello,
For all you fans of Shimano's rare offerings from 1989, I've posted two catalogues: A full-colour brochure detailing all the high-end components for Road and Mountain and a B&W dealer sales manual detailing all the low-end components from 1989.
