Best Non Aero levers and cantilevers

I'm currently running Brifters on my Roberts, but I wanted to experiment with non-aero and friction bar end levers on the Bridgestone that's going to replace it. I've used aero and friction bar ends before and I've bikes with non aero levers (both Mafac combos) so it might be interesting to try...

@non-fixie Would you say the Universal Levers/ Mafac combination is more effective then?

Sorted Touring Frame w. Decent clearances max 55 c2c top tube, 53 c2c seat

Hi Greg, Forgot to set this to sorted! I managed to get an early 80s Bridgestone!

Best Non Aero levers and cantilevers

Tempted by this combination, I take it they used this because it was the most effective combination on the short, steep descents and cobbled/ rough surfaces they raced on.

Best Non Aero levers and cantilevers

Ok so that's kind of too late for what I'm looking for personally. Though if they really are much better than say the Universal or Mafac levers maybe I need to just accept that and looks for some non aero SLR levers?

Going back to levers, what year was the SLR launched?

Will forget about those, maybe the originals were set up in a different fashion that actually worked?

https://www.cxmagazine.com/1975-cyclocross-world-champion-roger-de-vlaemincks-bike Intresting because he's using Campag levers (though probably customised with more than just the engraving) and Mafac cantilevers.

They're on my missus bike right now, I'll have to go take a look I know that seems the most obvious option, but there was something that stopped you easily doing that, but can't remember what?

Best vintage rear derailleur (thats fairly easily available) for friction

100%, it's to go on an early 80s Bridgestone Frame so that would fit very well!

Best vintage rear derailleur (thats fairly easily available) for friction

As above. Currently considering Shimano 600 Arabesque. Will probably be running with a 9 speed cassette, rather than my current 10. Would probably be running a triple at the front, but would still like to run a decent range at the back?

Best Non Aero levers and cantilevers

As above, looking for recommendations, doesn't have to be matching. I do have some Mafac Canti's, which work well, but I don't like the difficulties with toe in and the fact you have to let the tyres down to get the wheel out. Would consider say, Mafac Levers and Dia- Compe 980?

Plus if you're out for a few days or longer you can change a cable if it goes. If your hydraulic brakes fail and your in the mountains you're in trouble I keep intending to get one bike with discs. Not sure if I'd go cable or hydraulic, most likely singlespeed too, purely for bad weather...

https://www.renehersecycles.com/natsukos-alps/ Bit more Japanese stuff, a tourer than converts to a Pass Hunter or can be packed down very small for transport.

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

I think we could almost have a whole thread for modern randonneuring/ "all road" bikes and kit- while it still fitting into pre 96 technology. Brian Chapman and JP Weigle are true Constructeurs, Chapman in particular can and will build you much more than just the frame, but brakes, stems and...

What about Alex Singer, current owner Oliver Csuka's dad, Ernest was Singers nephew and apprentice and now I belive Oliver's son Walter is building too, very much in the style Alex and Ernest did?

René Herse was inherited by Jan Heine of Bicycle Quarterly/ Compass from Lyli Herse. Jan is a naturalised citizen, born in Germany, who moved to Seattle for academic reasons. I think he is partly French and certainly has spoken French longer than English. I've no doubt Lyli made sure her wider...
