GT info request prior to purchase (Please help me ID it!)

Good point, I was thinking if he was trying to make it out to be something it wasn't it might have fake decals making it look like something much higher spec than a standard 97 Avalanche, as you say, and also £50 isn't too excessive as a starting point providing it's in good nick. Was going to...

Re: Great knowledge bro, thanks for that. Im looking for something like this to do the LEJoG in a couple of years time, just waiting to hear back about the size, and see what his best price is. Can't think why rhe decal wouldnt be original so I'm going with that.

    Insanely narrow Marin bar

I've just discovered the Marin handlebar off the project bike is really short, at just 485mm. It's the original early 90s t6 marin lite bar so I'm gutted it's been cut. Two questions, 1stly why would someone chop it down SO much and 2ndly is it any use to anyone or should I take it to the tip?

Achieving a 'mirror' finish on an Aluminium Frame

I can't thank you all enough for your help, now I just can't wait to get started! Fortunately I already have a range of grades of wet and dry and some silvo, for the supa-finish I just need one of the drill attachments and a bar of that polish. I'll let you know how I get on, perhaps post some...

Achieving a 'mirror' finish on an Aluminium Frame

It would appear the Dichloromethane used in the above link is now a controlled substance under EU rules, industrial applications only. While the wire wool approach looks a goer, a chemical strip would appear to be the preferred option in terms of effort/result... Having looked at many frames...

Achieving a 'mirror' finish on an Aluminium Frame

Thanks for your suggestions folks, I definitely have more of an idea what I should be doing now. I'm mechanically minded - good with moving parts; paint jobs/surface finishing is a new thing for me as I've normally just frankensteined bikes so they run beautifully rather than looking great...

Achieving a 'mirror' finish on an Aluminium Frame

I've read plenty of threads on this site but none that specifically address the all-over mottling, or seem to concern frames like mine. I don't even know what needs stripping on this particular frame. I (perhaps mistakenly) assumed it was already bare metal, but just highly polished so if the...

Achieving a 'mirror' finish on an Aluminium Frame

I have recently acquired a '93 Marin Rocky Ridge for doing up. It has a 7005 Aluminium frame but is mottled to hell with oxidation pretty much all over. In places you can see it's original shiny finish and I'd like to get back to that if possible. Any ideas how? I used a bit of fine wet&dry on...

    Work bikes

I'm rockin' a '92 purple Giant Granite on my cross-London daily commute, been running it for 2 months without any squeaks so far! I bought it off an old lad for 40 quid, the frame and bars were rusty and scratched but the mechanics very well maintained so apart from adding new continental...
