    Claud Butler help please

Hi everyone. Back at home now so today I tried to strip the paint off the underside of the frame to expose the frame number. Out of interest I used Starchem Synstryp on recommendation - it was useless. Applied it thickly and wrapped it in cling film. An hour later no bubbling or anything...

    Claud Butler help please

Sounds as easy as quick release guards these days. BTW the photos above of the oiler came from a site http://classiccycleus.com/home/repair/bikes/ The bike discussed with the same oil reservoir and dispenser as on my bike is a 1937 Claud Butler Tour d'Angleterre which I hadn't heard of before...

Thanks gents. Some great tips. I'll take a closer look at the mudguard stay eyes. As for the oiler you are quite correct:

    Claud Butler help please

That's great. Had one on a previous motorbike (scottoilers are often fitted on chained motorbikes) but never heard of it on a cycle!

    Claud Butler help please

Thanks for that Keith. Sorry if these questions are basic but its really interesting to learn all of this and build from a personal knowledge base of practically zero! From what you say it seems these are cast lugs then. And possibly by Chater Lea although I can't see any markings on them...

    Claud Butler help please

Re: Thanks That all makes sense as I couldn't at first rationalise the decals with the frame build and age. Seems like a strip and respray is the answer. I guess that somewhere there must be info on original colour schemes?

Certainly the fork design seems to match. Wow that could be a really old frame then. I'll have to try and uncover that serial number.

Ok you are probably right, which means someone changed it to a single chain ring. Noted re the clip type headset as a date pointer. Thanks Piperdave.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into it once I've stripped everything. Interesting comment relating to the down tube braze on. I haven't seen it either on any posted pics of bikes. its a strange angle as well. There is another braze on further down just above the chain ring. I'd be...

    Claud Butler help please

Thanks so much for your speedy reply. That is an absolute beauty. Tell me, is that original paintwork or did you get it re-sprayed/re-lined? It looks fantastic, particularly with the chromed fork and chain stay ends. If I have a Claud Butler original then that is fantastic news and out go the...

    Claud Butler help please

Hi everyone. I've recently picked up a Claud Butler from a friend of a friend who has inherited a few bikes and frames originally from an old bike shop but which have been kept in a lock up for years. Originally I got it with the intention of spending the winter months converting it to a single...
