Advise for a rebuild needed! 1970/80's Merlin Road Racer

Very nice! I agree with Cefnbikie - far too good for a commuter! I refer you to my earlier post :)

    Retro racer/touring sizes

I'm only 5' 10" with a 32" leg and I tend to go for 23.5 for preference; I also currently have a 22.5" and what feels like a 24.5 though I've never actually measured it, I just feel kind of high up on it! Incidentally, the chap I bought it off was definitely no taller than me and had cycled all...

enough to make you go clipless?

What an idiot, hope he didn't try to use them like that! Does he find all the stuff falls out of his Ikea chest of drawers when he opens them?

Maybe there was an issue between them and Saturn car wheel maker

Moderns cranks on a older raleigh

You might have a bit of an issue with chain wrap on the rear derailleur, but you'll probs be ok. I put a long cage on my Raleigh Pro Race when I did a similar conversion just in case, but that's mainly because it was sitting there waiting to be used!

    Vintage Racer Headset Bearings etc.

A late 80s Raleigh will probably have bearings in a cage rather than loose inside the headset and bb. I know some like to replace these with loose bearings, but tbh they've probably lasted for the 1st 30 years of the bike's life so they can't be that bad and they're a lot harder to lose! You may...

    Retro Bike beginner...any advice?

Hi there Chris welcome to one of the best vintage bike forums! Looks like you've got yourself a very tidy little machine there, shouldn't need more than cables, a polish and maybe the bearings on headset, bottom bracket and wheels cleaned/replaced and it should ride a treat

    Shimano Uniglide 7 Speed?

Keep it as it is! Also, in case of another situation with a uniglide, only 7 speeds are hens' teeth, the 6 speeds aren't so rare, and the smallest cog is the one that holds it on so just get a 6 speed and swap the smallest cogs over.

Advise for a rebuild needed! 1970/80's Merlin Road Racer

Once you have a respray and make it look spanking you won't want to commute in all weathers, you'll "save it for best" and look for a tattier racer to commute on. Then one day you'll feel sorry for the commuter and treat it to a respray, and then you'll not want to ride it in all weathers and...

Very cheeky, I love it

Claud Butler Dalesman date of manufacture

Try looking for a date code on the components most likely to be original, such as crank or brake calipers. The serial doesn't give you any clue and the "BS6102 part 1" standard was introduced in '81 and is possibly still current!

    Advice needed pls!! Peugeot Pemiere

I agree, though you don't just have to look for a Ventoux, Raleigh made loads of models with more or less the same 501 frame. Look for Sirocco, Elan, Pro Race, Kelloggs etc. etc. These are nice, light, sporty machines, and you if you keep looking for a coupla weeks, one's bound to turn up. Like...

    Advice needed pls!! Peugeot Pemiere

It looks pretty tidy (and quite pretty), it's a bit more than I'd be prepared to pay for a fairly basic model of bike but then pugs do command a bit of a premium (plus London prices  ). They're easy to get bits for (though some have bits that are "French" threaded - still not a problem...

My daughter recently moved out; I do miss Wossername terribly, she had a fantastic collection of nail varnish!

old Claud Butler frame..but how old?

I use photobucket, their mobile app works quite nicely; upload your photos then copy the "direct" code. On here, switch to "full editor", click Img button and paste the code you copied in between the two [img]s that appear

    Whats in the name?

Ah yes, who can forget the Nova - didn't go down too well in Spanish speaking countries - or the MR2 in France (pronounced "Merde" en Francais)

    Whats in the name?

Lots of things named after storms and winds, (most VW's and maseratis for instance), I've got a Chinook - not the helicopter, I haven't got room for all my bikes nevermind that - and had a Sirocco til recently. Edit: BTW a Welsh cauli is called a blodfresych which is not a good name for a bike...
