Dragging myself back to riding not just hoarding bikes and getting fat....

I'm sure there's many more of us! And the rugby league team I follow hasn't had a win all season thus far. Sigh...

Dragging myself back to riding not just hoarding bikes and getting fat....

This. Do you have a newsletter I might subscribe to? Seriously, those are wise words. There is often only so much we can do for ourselves, but we should still give those things a red hot go.

Dragging myself back to riding not just hoarding bikes and getting fat....

For a minute I thought someone had hacked my account... :D Married, 3 kids (2 in school, one who won't get off his arse because he "needs a year off after finishing school"), wife who thinks the house (which is brick and tile, solid, clean and not that old) is a never ending project of making...

    Frame Identification.

Mmm, there you go! That's cool info. I suppose losing the "I" would stop confusion with "1" but man, what was their objection to the letter "F"?!

    Frame Identification.

C corresponds to the number 3. March is the third month. Using letters saved them from the serial number having an extra digit for October (J for 10), November (K for 11) and December (L for 12). The other numbers indicate that it was made on a Tuesday just before morning tea, but I could be...

Which bike helmet do you have for retro riding?

For day to day riding I have a Bell 4Forty MIPS. For retro riding I also use the Bell 4Forty MIPS. Comfortable and light. Thankfully haven't had to test it's ability to save my skull. But for true dedicated retro riding there is only one option... Hehehe, when that product was released...

    Reviving elastomers in a microwave!?!?

The elastomers have started to degrade. They will get hot and might soften up but as soon as they cool again, they're back to firm. I'd be worried that I'd heat them up to much and end up with shorter, fatter elastomers and less travel with each stroke. If they're munted, you've got nothing...

In the words of Rick Astley "Never Gonna Give You Up"

There's stuff I have that when building a bike, I know will work and will fit and I use it - forgetting "oh that's 30 years old (or thereabouts)". Race Face I beam cranks. SRAM X0 9 speed shifters and derailleurs. Anything XT from the 90s - it's the era of bikes I like and the best groupset I...

A Long Time Ago, In A Garage Not So Far, Far Away.... 1991 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp - Over Three Decades Under A Blanket!!

Jaw status = dropped. I have never been a fan of Specialized, never desired to own one. Just my own view, I always gravitated to other brands and as a result I don't care for them, frankly. But... That is beyond awesome. Absolutely beautiful time capsule. Anyone, even me, would be proud...

    Top of the range

"Built with with top notch parts" - Yes, Rock Shox are a respected brand of suspension, no, your Indy XCs don't qualify. "Disc breaks" - I'd swap them before you hurt yourself "Clip in peddles" - Peddle all you want, I ain't buying. "Too many upgrades to list" - What? You're too lazy to type...

White vinegar - are plastics ok?

Yes, it won't affect plastics, at least in the short time the part is in the vinegar bath for. Don't forget to add salt when you install them. And a lemon wedge if you want to be fancy.* It is good for removing surface rust and oxidation. *I have heard that the part can rust quicker after...

Help with fitting Syncros Stem/Bar Combo

That's how I've done it, alternatively a small steel rule (like one of those little 4" or 6" ones) across the slot, that way you're less likely to have a coin drop out if you go too far with the other bolt.

Help with fitting Syncros Stem/Bar Combo

The cost of living crisis is hard. Not everyone has two coins, you know! :)

the unofficial 'cool' 1980's Reynolds 531/501 bike thread

I'll throw this into the pile. 1990 Kerry Hopkins Reynolds 531 All Terrain. Kerry was a Sydney, Australia based builder renowned for his road and track frames. Kerry still runs a bike shop in suburban Sydney, but as far as I know, is no longer on the torches. Built with a mix of XT and...

    Extreme component branding practices...

The Kaiser Chiefs are onto it... Television's on the blink (there's nothing on it) I really want a really big coat (with words on it) What do you want for tea? (I want crisps) Why didn't you join the team? (I just didn't) It's cool to know nothing It's cool to know nothing Bloody...

If you started from scratch again...

    1. Saved up for a Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall stack 2. Formed a band, wrote hit albums 3. Developed addictions so bad that I made Motley Crue look like choir boys 4. Rehab 5. Started MTBing and bought exactly the same stuff I have now.

A question on XTR, XT and LX mechs on 90's MTB

^ This. For some reason people see the rear derailleur as some sort of highly important gadget. After all, it swaps between sprockets and that's what makes the bike rideable over all sorts of topography and terrain. The fact that (at least until electronic drivetrains) it is simply a cage...

Work Shed & Tool Wall sorted for 2025… Time to get on with them projects…

Yep. I hear you! Got to the point where I pulled the top box forward so the little shelf disappeared and the bottom drawer was no longer a sealed vault.

    Worst/Funniest experiences buying used bikes?

I bought a Giant hardtail off an online auction site which I was planning to rebuild for my daughter. Basically, I wanted the frame, headset, seatpost and wheels. The rest I was planning to toss and replace with better and lighter parts and a modern 1x drivetrain. I get there, and the bloke...

    Retrobike resolutions 2025?

I tripped over a BMX frame carrying the Christmas decorations back to storage. I then put my back out trying to navigate around some boxes of parts that are set aside to be cleaned up and go back on their respective BMX frames. Bloody place is a mess. My resolution, or realisation, is that...
