Shoppers (oh, help me!) Warning: RSW III content!

So I managed to tune the gears in etc., & commuted on it a couple of times (like, 2 miles each way) gets some funny looks, mind! Don't know how the previous owner managed to skid up the rear tyre so much, that drum brake doesn't work much! Guess I ought to take it apart & see if there's...

Shoppers (oh, help me!) Warning: RSW III content!

Re: Shoppers (oh, help me!) Maybe I prefer the way the earlier ones look! I'll post a pic of mine when it's rideable. I take it those are the same tyres used on the front of Choppers? Were they easy to track down, & do you reckon there's any left?

Shoppers (oh, help me!) Warning: RSW III content!

Re: Shoppers (oh, help me!) First mystery solved: This pic shows the safety wire, & the end of stem where it's secured by a roll pin (does this look factory, or the work of an anxious parent with basic skills?): Once that was out the way, I could get a look at everything & realised the...

Shoppers (oh, help me!) Warning: RSW III content!

Re: Shoppers (oh, help me!) Now it's becoming clearer! There's a safety wire through the centre, looped around the brake bolt. Just in case Granny popped a wheelie with the clamp loose! Looks like the stiction is between the steerer & nylon bush. What lube to use there? How to repack bearings...

Shoppers (oh, help me!) Warning: RSW III content!

Re: Shoppers (oh, help me!) Sorry I should have described it in more detail! There's no expander on this, the one piece bar/stem is secured by tightening a clamp around the steerer (above the nylon sleeve which serves as top bearing, but below the lock nuts)! I guess I'm going to have to...

Shoppers (oh, help me!) Warning: RSW III content!

Redirect if necessary, but they're not MTB, & they're road ridden so where should I ask? Never had any interest in 'em myself, but a Raleigh RSW III came my way last week. Seeing as the DynoHub lights still work, I thought it's at least worth a tinker to get it rideable. First problem is...

    The stupid questions thread.

Will original brake blocks damage my rims? I was showing off my recently acquired Haro e-stay at the jumble, & pleased with how original the parts are. My mate pointed out the original brakes (work fine in the dry) will wear the almost unmarked rims out in no time & thinks I should get some...

Toughest 90's steel frame you have ridden

Would have said the '94 Rockhopper I owned from new was pretty tough; just got it back from a long term loan & found drive side drop out cracked through. At least the tubes are ok though! (it did many tasks including touring, SSing, child carrying, towing & polo)

    1990? Haro Impulse Comp

I think I may have been a little dismissive of e-stays in the past so never went looking for one but when this came my way it seemed so close to original spec even down to the Ritchey force 2.0 tyres, I just had to fix it up & try it. Main problem was that the thread on the steerer was eaten...

    headset worry

WD Pro, that's a neat solution, where are they from? Spoke too soon on the Tange set up. Still couldn't get it quite right, even with new loose balls somehow there were tight spots. Got me thinking about the '94 Rockhopper I had new, & that headset would never stay tight. Cured it with an STX...

    Un-jamming STI's?

Thanks for the advice, got the confidence to take the cover off with no bits popping out, also removed the cable & found outer had pushed through ferrule at one end so I guess that wasn't helping! all seems to work fine now, hoping I get time to get out & give it a good testing Sunday.

    Un-jamming STI's?

Talking about early 90's 7 spd with 2 unequal size triggers, one above the other. When I got the project, rear shifter worked fine & still does. Front, however was unmovable. Assuming the original grease could be solid in there, I sprayed IPA cleaner & GT 85 in there & it freed up for a week or...

    headset worry

What tatra said sounds most likely, but didn't actually check that on the original set-up. All parts there were NOS, so wear wouldn't have been an issue just poor quality. By this point I'd found some Tange parts further back in the cave, at least they have a name so I guess a period upgrade...

    headset worry

Look fine on the new fork, bearing parts on the original had destroyed the fork thread while keeping theirs.

    headset worry

Picked up an interesting project, one of the main problems was the thread was knackered on the 1" steerer. Spare fork & headset came in the deal, no worries. Took it out for a test run & the headset loosens pretty quick. All the parts seem in the right order (tag ring between the nuts, etc) I'm...

    Singlespeed crank suggestions? M952 discussion.

Re: Singlespeed crank suggestions? I vote for old LX type (110 bcd) plenty of metal in the spider, & easy to get rings down to 34 t. Tough, easy to polish & not silly looking. Used them on loads of bikes, easy to find at jumbles etc. but may turn up on complete bikes in small ads for bobbins.

When were MTB SPDs first available?

Thanks for the info, that Mombat site particularly interesting. What I was thinking, I'd rather go with SPDs if I'm going to actually ride the thing. Got a few other issues to address before I get to that point! When it's in working order I can post up pics & see if someone can link to original...

When were MTB SPDs first available?

Sorry I haven't been around on here for a while so may have missed this important info. Just picked up a Haro Impulse, think it's a '90 model (Black, with Exage 400LX). I'm used to SPDs on my other bikes & the originals on this bike are rough; so are SPD age appropriate or should I go for some...

Raleigh Gemini Trail (bit like a 'cross bike ?)

Re: (bit like a 'cross bike (or a polo bike?)) Might put frame & forks in the Bristol Bike Jumble tomorrow if anyone's interested. (didn't get that much polo action TBH, I still mostly play fixed!)
