    Another DIY rear derailleur cage.

BITD I bought a Campag Nuove Record rear mech and was disappointed with its performance compared to a Sun Tour Cyclone. It became clear on examination that the Sun Tour Slant Parallelogram (patented) was a better design for changing across sprockets which increased in size (as they do of...

8 Speed cassete on a 7 speed freehub

The main concern for me will be whether the 'star' on the freehub engages on the mating part of the hub - not visible until the freehub is removed, and there are at least 2 different Shimano designs.

    What’s this Ti bike?

I think the first question I'd be asking is "do you have a purchase receipt?"

8 Speed cassete on a 7 speed freehub

If you can find a freehub that fits? The bolt holding the freehub to the hub body can be swapped over, so no problem there; Whether the 'shape' of the hub to freehub interface will be the same is unknown/unlikely unless you are comparing manufacturer's data or are very lucky. There is also the...

    Bb recommendation for stronglight 49d

I have a Nervar 117mm (IIRC) spindle (ISO) if that will do the job? It's used but very good condition ie run-in with no pitting. I can take some measurements if that helps. OOps - I've just seen you stated 118 was too short!

    Touching up and protecting decals

I think you've done a cracking job (no pun intended). In case it's of use to anyone else, I'll add:- I've used a brushing clearcoat on my bikes, it's sold in art shops and the make is Winsor & Newton. Only a small bottle, but it goes a long way - I imagine a whole frame could be clearcoated for...

    What paint for shock springs?

I've used Dulux gloss paint on car springs, and it has lasted years .... nice and flexible. Readily available in many colours from the local big sheds.

Do you think their finger slipped?

When I've seen prices for things like that on Ebay I have a little fun...... Like the 'special' £1 coin for £50. I send the seller a note saying I have 2 the same (which is true) that he can have for £30 the pair to get himself a profit. I've never had a reply  When a miss-strike £2...

    UN300 - less than 300 miles and it's toast

I've found the RPM ones last well (but I'm only a fairweather rider now), if I get caught in rain whilst I'm out, so be-it. I also came up with an idea that can probably be used to eliminate any pre-load on the bearings. When 'cartridges' rely on the cups being tightened into the frame, some of...

Issues with Spa Cycles - advice?

Mine (bolts on spa xd2 crankset) were certainly very tight (but not impossible) to get undone when I purchased them 7 years ago, so maybe not a recent thing? I suspect if I'd not undone them when the assembly was new, that they would never have come undone! All threads were greased (as I...

    Hand Painting a headtube?

yes indeed, Humbrol is good, but one shot is even better...... the longer the drying time the better for avoiding brush marks, but beware of dust. I'm thinking it would be fun to paint a frame to resemble wood ie faux woodgraining :)

A Retro Road bike with that can keep up with the modern bikes - advice please ?

From what I can see in the photos I'd disagree - The rear axle seems to be the centre of the dropout, so I'd expect the brake pads to be in the centre of their adjustment. Surely this bike doesn't have 'long' dropouts? as that would be contrary to what they are aiming at - it's not a touring...

A Retro Road bike with that can keep up with the modern bikes - advice please ?

The Ti Raleigh looks the part until the detail is examined. As someone else pointed out, the dropouts don't appear to be forged, but pressed steel. (sorry, I can't find the post), I've just noticed the brake blocks at as low as they can possibly be on the calipers - Hmm, Not ideal surely. I...

Scanning and 3D printing impossible to find vintage parts

That got me looking - Isn't it just a 1 1/8" cap that takes a cap-head bolt to fit the star nut? If so, what's so special?

Issues with Spa Cycles - advice?

I wondered what the outcome would be . Sorry to hear of the problem, but if you are after buying more cranks, 'boycotting' them won't help you. I understand your frustration, and in the heat of the moment, I'd think the same. Maybe (as age is getting the better of me, and my way of dealing...

I need shorter cranks, but by how much?? (155mm vs 160mm)

Ha Ha, you must have spoken with the owner John - He's 'old school' and Yorkshire, known for his lack of bedside manner, but just give as good as you get and he's ok - treat it as fun :-) TBF most shops would invalidate the warranty if parts were removed, so fair play to Spa. Mine seemed good...

I need shorter cranks, but by how much?? (155mm vs 160mm)

Can I ask... What was disappointing about the 160mm chainset from Spa?
