Re: +1 for getting the correct bottom bracket with your chainset, this is more than likely the route of your problems with the front mech. I've got a bunch of 1990 Marin's and the lower range ones like this come with cheap cup and cone units which are so much worse than a Shimano sealed...

Re: Good luck with the seatpost, I have a '90 Eldridge with the 29.5 requirement. Managed to get a 29.6 in easily enough with a bit of cleaning though, used plenty of copper grease to make sure it will come out!
