Sounds exactly like a missing/damaged/wrong/incorrect fitment of the spacer between the hub bearing and the freehub bearing sometimes the spacer has a chamfered edge on one side and it will only work one way round

I’d say the grease in the mechanisms has degraded and become stickier and the pawls aren’t releasing properly to engage the ratchet degrease and relube, they’ll work if you can already manually move move all the components
