    1996 Proflex 756

Re: Love it. I have plans to mod/rebuild my 856 for next season. Going 1X8 and with a 85 mm Magura fork and BB7 discs up front. The last I rode it seriously it had a 76mm Manitou FS fork and was great compared to the stock Girvin fork. What are you additional plans for the 756?

    Brake Question

I have a question about disc brakes (Avid BB 7 in this instance). Is there a difference between calipers between a 160mm rotor and a 180mm rotor or do they use the same caliper and different size mounting brackets to accommodate the larger rotor? Thanks

Finally finished building my daughters new bike!

Looks great. If it has bolts for bottle cages on the seat tube that you can remove maybe you won't have to cut the post.

    Girvin ODS Question

Even simpler than measuring as it turns out. If the shaft has internal threads it's a rear, external threads it's a front. And as you mentioned, the rear one is longer.

    Girvin ODS Question

I'll measure them and let you know. Have to dig out the front one...

    Manitou FS Bulge Fork Questions

I have a Manitou FS Bulge Fork that I would like to rebuild. It has only moderate use and is in good shape... But the bike it was on was hung upside down in the basement years back and the oil ran out of the cartridge. By this time no parts were available from Answer etc etc. When I...

    Thin MTB frames

Jamis (Dragon!) and KHS made frames that fit the bill and shouldn't break the bank. The early lugged TREK 900 series were True Temper, but the tubing was over sized (I had a 1991 970). I believe they ended with the 1994 model year and went to the smaller, non lugged frames starting in 1995...

    Mag 21, air/oil?

This is from my genuine Rockshox Mag 21 pump. "Recommended pressure 35-45 psi" The gauge maxes out at 60psi. I would be careful about over inflating and damaging/ruining the seals. Parts aren't easy to come by for these forks. Good luck, I hope you grab it up and put it to use. BTW...

    Mag 21, air/oil?

Good fork. I still have two of them and am putting one on a '90 Trek 970 I am re-doing. I think 80-100 seems really high. I weigh 225 and I think I used to run mine @ 47 lbs. I'll check my pump and re post though.

    Shimano Msystem cantilever pads

I have had the same problem with them. Scuff the pads, clean the rims, adjust and readjust and they just don't work. Different levers, different bikes, same results. I was always happy with Kool Stop Eagle Claws on my cantis.

    Stuck seatpost

I have never tried it, but Sheldon Brown's website said that ammonia will work in a lot of cases with stuck seat posts. It's cheap and no threat of heat related damage to the paint. Maybe give it a try and let us know if it works. Scott

Clydesdale ProFlex 856 Rear Suspension Question

When choosing between Noleen and Risse for a rear shock replacement on a ProFlex 856 for a 250 lb rider, what is my best choice? My current set up is a firm Speed Spring, but my ODS has a oil seal problem. Any feedback from others 856 riding Clydesdale's is appreciated. Thanks Scott

    Newbie checking in

Stumbled onto the site while Google image searching some older hardtails. Wow, the time I have spent reading posts and looking at pix. Great site. I have been thinking seriously about getting back on the trails since I have spent the past 12 years riding the pavement. I had a 1991 Trek...
