Okay, got a Giant Granite off ebay, 36 quid. Nice bike other than a too big seatpost has been inserted (hammered in?) in a former life. Bike is presently upside down while the seatpost/tube swims in penetrating oil. I've read Sheldon's advice, and have previous experience of stuck posts, so...

Yep I'm with you on this, I have... 1. Posh road bike 2. Hybrid with mudguards (get to work!). 3. Retro Saracen MTB for riding with my kids. Nothing worse than me on road bike, and them wanting to go cross country on MTB, and I'm like "Ermm no!" 4. Still tracking another retro possible...

Just don't bid at all, use auctionsniper and set your max in there. Beware that Ebay autobids for you, if an item has a current bid of £10 and then you bid £12 and set a max of £50, someone else comes along and bids £14 with a max of £52, then the current bid jumps to £52 pretty much immediate.

Many thanks for the responses. Didn't occur to me it wouldn't be a cartridge. However I have the seat post out, and peering down I can see the spindle. I'd like to replace with a cartridge to avoid future hassles, as I have the Shimano BB tool.

Hello Folks, Need a few pointers with BB removal. Got an old Holdsworth Claud Butler Majestic, serial in the range 3500-ish (bike in garage, me in house so can't check). Clearly it doesn't take a Shimano BB tool. It has a metal ring on the non-drive side, with maybe 5 notches on it. Presume...
