    Cycling Books review thread

"In Pursuit of Stardom: Los Nomades du Velo Anglais" by Tony Hewson. A really good memoir of the early English 'privateers' who went to France in the 1950s to compete in Road Races over there. Fascinating and hilarious in parts, possibly one of the best cycling books I've ever read.

    broadband speeds.

Virgin Media Cable here; the service I have is 100Mbps Up and 10Mbs down, I regularly get 97-103Mbps up and 9.75Mbps down (according to Speedtest.net). Can't complain, really! :D

Recomend me some SPD MTB Shoes

I like Pearl Izumi X-Road shoes; I bought a new pair recently from Evans, they are extremely comfortable (so much so, I wear them all day at work!) Bit of a discount too; currently £45 (apparently retail for £85!) http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pea ... e-ec027192

    Tour question

The timings for bunch finishes are done for safety reasons; otherwise, you'd have the issue of dozens of riders trying to sprint for the line rather than a handful - which wouldn't work (they tried, which is why the "bunch" rules are in place). Same with the 3km rule - if a rider...

    Le Tour 2012!

    what lx chainset is this?

I have the same crankset on my '99 East Peak (not original, I know). To get the spider off, I had to put the tool in a vice, then turn the crank (with an extension bar over the end to get leverage). It was very tight, but no loctite (which is what I'd expected to be honest).

Armstrong charged with doping by USADA

One of the accusations is use of a corticosteroid, the same corticosteroid he was prescribed, and that was approved for use, to treat saddle-sores. The same corticosteroid that was approved for use (not only by Lance Armstrong) by the UCI and cleared by WADA. Essentially, these are the...

    Anti virus help

For Windows PCs, the combination of Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes' Anti-Malware program is a decent setup, both 'free' and both lightweight. Also CCleaner for general Windows "housekeeping" is worth installing.

    Chain Cleaners actually Work!!!

I use a Muc-off Chain Cleaner, which comes with an aerosol of de-greaser attached, brings the chain up shiny and new. Once it's clean, I wipe it down with a rag to dry it, then re-lube each link with Green Oil, then run the chain through all the gears for a few minutes to make sure everything...

In the last week I seem to have acquired the bulk of an M750 Groupset (Cassette, Rapidfire shifters, Front and Rear Mech) for the combined sum of £47. Rather happy with that!

The Demise of the British Pub

My local, one of seven pubs in the village, has just had its rent put up again by Punch Taverns, and this has (of course) increased the price of the beer. However, the pub prides itself on being part of the community, indeed, it is known as "the village pub" and attracts a mixed crowd, mostly...

    gear jumping

Lube the chain if you haven't already and check for stiff links. Then check the inner cable moves without snagging. I recent had a very similar problem on my '99 East Peak, changing gears on the bike stand was fine, but when putting the power on, the chain skipped all over the cassette. I...

    m570, any good?

The 570 Hubs are excellent; I have a wheelset I had built up in 1998 using 570 hubs and Mavic X517 rims, that is still going strong getting on for 14 years later with minimal fettling (a couple of strip/lubes and that's been it). Currently doing sterling service on my single-speed commuter.
