Attractive Seatpost Quick Release Replacement Solutions

I have a Ritchey Ultra with Tom's classic fastback seat stay design. The frame came sans seatpost quick release and the frame requires a relatively long quick release so none of the period correct ones I've picked up over the years fits. I managed to buy an aftermarket modern version, but it was...

    The Ritchey Project

Hey Retrobikers. I don't know if this has been discussed before (I searched the site and didn't get a hit), but I discovered this vintage Ritchey bike database and thought i'd share it. It's a good place to find some catalogues and to compare your serial number to the ones posted up by other...

    I'm shocked!

The Race Face turbine is not on Velobase! I think I may need to make an account and correct that.

The Pros Closet is going out of business

I just learned that The Pros Closet is going out of business after 18 years. That's really sad. I wonder what's going to happen with the museum exhibits.

Installing a modern Shimano front mech

I'm swapping my winter commuter/gravel bike components from my old Elephant NFE to a 2024 Kona Rove DL frame (I stopped liking the low trail geometry on the Elephant). The old 105 front mech I used on the NFE wouldn't fit on the Rove so I found a virtually new braze on version on Craigslist...

Rackless Handlebar Bags - Anyone Use Them?

I like handlebar bags and have been using a rackless one from Arkel over the last year. I'm finding it a bit small for my needs though (5l) because I typically end up carrying stuff for my wife as well as me. I'm thinking of getting a larger rackless rando bag (probably from Choike), wondering...

    Mini v-brakes

Anyone here using mini v-brakes on their vintage touring bikes / cyclocross bikes? In general I'm ok with the braking I get using early 80's cantilevers, but I do live in a rainy place so having a bit of extra power and the simplicity of v-brakes along with ability to use modern bolt on pads...

Suntour Command Shifters - anyone upgrade to Shimano pull ratios/more speeds?

I have a set of Suntour Command Shifters - I think the original version. I ran them for a while on my Ritchey Ultra with dirt drops and a shimano rear cluster. I didn't appreciate that Suntour and Shimano used slightly different spacings/pull ratios when they were in the indexing war and they...

What's the used vintage bike market like where you live?

I've been needing to make some space in my garage/bike shed and have been trying to sell a couple of vintage bikes and the market seems completely dead. Or the prices have dropped so much that I'm waaaaaay overpriced at 60% of what I paid for the bikes originally 5 or so years ago. And these are...

    BOTM theme suggestion

Hey Gov, have we had a parts bin and patina BOTM theme yet? I ask, because that's probably the only BOTM that I might have a chance at winning. Another idea is a hybrid / gravel conversion BOTM competition. There are lots of great drop bar conversions of hybrids and 26ers on the site - might...

There is a Sachs Bike Frame for Sale Locally

Its my size (I think). I am in serious danger here. Somebody take my bank card quick!

What is your favorite vintage looking touring tire?

I'm thinking of something nice and fat - like 700C x 35 - would be the maximum that would fit under mud guards on my bike. Currently I have Schwalbe Marathons which are ok, but I'd like something with more of a vintage vibe and maybe with a little less heft. Still want some puncture protection...

    Freewheel compatibility on 126mm hubs

I recently acquired a vintage road bike with a 126mm rear hub with a 5 speed shimano freewheel mounted. I intend to use this bike as frequent rider and would like to upgrade to a 7 speed freewheel (ideally a shimano HG one to get that really slick friction shifting). I've read different things...

    1985 Miyata 1000

Bought a 1985 Miyata 1000 touring bike in near original condition. Probably the only changes are tires, tubes saddle, pedals and brake pads. Even has the horrible 80’s foam grips and a dynamo on the back wheel! Only issue so far is a loose headset. Previous owner said it was a barn find that was...

How much would you pay for a vintage Miyata 1000?

I'm toying with buying a mid 80's Miyata 1000 - looks to be in good condition based on the photos. Am curious what the group feels is market value for these bikes. I see the prices all over the place - $1500 to $300 CDN is what I've seen over the years locally.

    Projects Waiting for Spring

I started stripping a Bridgeston MB2 frame before Christmas. Its pretty much ready for primer, but its too cold to coat it. My workspace is unheated and unventilated. It probably wont be warm enough until March. :( Have sympathy for me.

What mountain bikes did you own BITD?

The discussion of crap brands that made good bikes got me thinking about this. I saw my first mountain bike at Caps when shopping for a bike to use as a commuter when I started university. I couldn't afford one then and bought a Norco road bike used and rode it hard for a couple of years. I was...

Bonded carbon tube frames - Members Perspectives?

So I've seen a number of those aluminum lugged / carbon tube frames from the early 90's on the local buy and sell marketplaces over the past years and wonder what people think of them? I remember thinking they were very cool BITD, but now I am completely biased against them as a potential...

    Mechanical paint removal question

I'm stripping down a frame using a combination of sanding and a brass wheel on a drill. Things are going fairly well, but I'm wondering if its good practice to sand the frame down with increasingly fine wet dry paper to remove any scratches before priming and painting?

Removing paint from a vintage silca pump

So I got a vintage silca pump as a gift - I'm guessing late 70's or early 80's vintage. It appears to have been painted (it shows red under black). Wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how to gently remove paint from this old plastic
